He is trying to convince the survivors to help him in this. He also recalls his relationship with the terminal Rose. Bernard was constantly looking for a cure for Rose till the time he was destined to crash on this island. Jack thinks that 'The Others' will agree to a tradeoff between Henry Gale and Walt Lloyd.
